That's Just Disturbing

May 8, 2017

Having worked in childcare for roughly a thousand years...haha…I am very familiar with the feeling of being on guard when you finally get a little one to sleep.  You want to put signs up on the door letting all who come near know to be very quiet, as not to disturb the peace.

We like peace.  We crave it.  We don’t want outside forces rocking the boat of our lives.  When we face stormy waters, we long for Jesus to stand up in the boat and cry out, “Peace, be still.”

However, as life goes along, we inevitably encounter circumstances that disturb us.  I’m not just referring to people or situations that get under our skin—but unholy stormy waters that leave our souls agitated.  We face a restlessness that would drive us to change circumstances ourselves, or just run the other direction.

So what are we supposed to do?

In my experience, this is a beautiful time to allow the Holy Spirit to pray for you.  When your insides are so disquieted that you cannot form an intelligible prayer, just let Him.  And don’t stop letting Him until you are washed over with His peace.

Don’t spend so much time trying to figure out why you are disturbed, why you are restless.  Just go ahead and lift up your soul to the Lord.  Go ahead and bring Him the storm.  And even if you do know why your soul is unsettled, you will not understand it from His perspective until you get alone with Him.  Also, thank God for the turbulence!  We often have no clue that we are supposed to pray about something until it bothers us.  Lord, thank You for the discernment that there may be a storm brewing, and that You invited me to pray about it.

I encourage you to make every effort to still and quiet your soul, though the waves may be crashing into your boat.  I encourage you to be still and know that He is God. Come what may, I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Scripture to read:

Psalm 42                     Mark 4:37-41

Psalm 73                     Romans 8:26

Psalm 131                   Psalm 25:1

Psalm 46                     Habakkuk 3:17-19

Dear God, the Calmer of my storms, I will put my trust in You.  I choose to be still and know You, to be still and wait on You.  I choose to praise You, no matter how I feel.  Please pray for me, when I don’t have a clue what to pray. Thank You.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
