Don't Be Afraid

“He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.”

Once upon a time there was a younger version of me that would not back down from a fight…as long as it was with my brother. But as we grew up, he kept growing when I stopped. I became a little less inclined to pick a fight with the 6’4” guy towering over me.

For the most part we pick our battles—namely those we know that we can win. When it comes to spiritual warfare, there are some enemies that don’t seem to make me feel very threatened. Then there are those who are “too strong for me.”

There are re-occurring encounters with our spiritual “bullies”—those things that tend to make us cower back in fear, rather than face in faith. Maybe it is something that has conquered us before, and is expecting a warm welcome from us. Perhaps the enemy notices when we decide to step forward in what God has called us to do. Perhaps he witnesses us sharing our faith—or catches us digging deeper into the Word than ever before. Maybe, just maybe…our enemy has begun to feel threatened himself.

As with most bullies, the enemy would use intimidation to back us into a corner or out of the ring altogether. But how about this: we just stand. Armor up, and stand. Having done all, stand. When anxiety would tempt us to run the other direction, let us choose to stand. When the joy of the Lord within us is in danger of being stolen, let us stand. Remembering that whatever it is the enemy is trying to make us stop doing, there must be a reason we should continue.

Yes, there are Goliaths who are too strong for me. But there is a God who is too strong for Goliath, and I am on His side.

Scripture to read:

Psalm 18:16-17, 30-40

Judges 4:16-24

Psalm 94:16-19

1 Samuel 17

1 John 4:4

Psalm 56:3

Father, You are victorious—always. I may be too small to overcome the enemy on my own, but I know that You are with me. I know that You are faithful to fight for me. When I am afraid, I choose to trust You. Don’t let me fall, Lord. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
